CHIEF KEVIN M. SHEA FIREMATIC PARTICIPATION AWARD
This award is named in honor of Chief Kevin M. Shea who suffered a Line of Duty Death in January 2004. We are proud of the Elsmere Firefighters that been honored in Chief Shea’s memory since 2005. Each recipient is listed below.
Mark C. Rukwid
2023
This award was created in the memory of Chief Kevin M. Shea, who died in the Line of Duty on January 24, 2004. This annual award recognizes an Elsmere firefighter who, like Chief Shea, shows endless commitment, dedication, and love for the volunteer fire service and the community. Tonight's recipient, like past recipients, maintains a high level of emergency response, drill, meeting, training, and other details attendance. The recipient has volunteered to assist in every fire prevention detail conducted this year. No "Spring Chicken", he responds to the fire station on his classic Schwinn Sting-Ray. Like his father, mother, and sister (all members of Elsmere Fire), we are very proud of this year's recipient also. We proudly announce that Firefighter Mark C. Rukwid is the recipient of the 2023 Kevin M. Shea Participation Award.

2021 KEVIN M SHEA PARTICIPATION AWARD
SEPTEMBER 18, 2021
This year’s Kevin M Shea Award recipient has a lot in common with Chief Shea. Both share dedication, devotion, humor and just a general love for the fire service.
In talking with the recipient’s dad, the recipient grew up in a family of first responders. In fact, he was issued his first set of bunkers at the ripe old age of 3.
Fast forward about 12 years, the Elsmere Fire Explorer’s welcomed him in to their arms, and eventually becoming an officer within the that group. After numerous hours of drill and studying, this individual finally made it to the ranks of firefighter on June 30 2020. And then, he finally got his first REAL set of turn-out gear.
Since then, the recipient attends almost every drill and class while being a fulltime student at Hudson Valley. His fire call count is of one of the highest (except when he’s at work or in class). His training is extensive. He can tell you the exact number of bounces off a roof a K-12 saw will take before it comes to rest.
It is my pleasure to introduce to you, the 2021 Kevin M Shea Participant Award winner, Fire Fighter Sam Sleurs.
